Ok, so we've got a bee in our bonnet, but once you start looking into this further, it gets quite infuriating! When we were feeding our children, we were lucky in that we got the support we needed and didn't feel threatened when out and about, but this is not the case for everyone - in fact rarely so. We campaigned a little at the time, but now there's some major people moving against it, and so we'd like to support them.

 From the BreastfeedingManifesto website:

You might recently have seen in the press the outcry surrounding the feature in this week's OK magazine where Katie Price "Jordan" and Peter Andre promote SMA formula milk alongside adverts for follow-on milk. This article is a clear example of formula companies taking advantage of loop-holes in the in the law -loop-holes that YOU can help close, read on to find out more.

The BDA is a member of the Breastfeeding Manifesto coalition. The Breastfeeding manifesto coalition looks forward to a society where:

    • Women feel enabled to initiate and continue breastfeeding for as long as they wish
    • Parents are supported to make informed choices about feeding their babies
    • Everyone is aware of the significant benefits associated with breastfeeding

There are two government consultations live during August and early September which means we have a unique opportunity to push for changes in UK law which will implement 2 objectives outlined in the Breastfeeding Manifesto:
This summer the UK government wants to hear your views on two key issues that relate to baby-feeding, E
mail your elected representatives and spread the word to friends, family and contacts.  The live government consultations that you can have your say on right now are:

1) The rights of breastfeeding mothers to breastfeed in public
As part of the Single Equality Bill, there is the possibility that the Law could be changed such that it will become illegal to ask a woman to stop breastfeeding in public. This consultation also provides an opportunity to push for legislation to protect breastfeeding women who are returning to work.

2) The promotion of formula milk
The Food Standards Agency is currently consulting on regulations for the advertising of formula milk.  However the proposed regulations are inadequate for the job of protecting all parents and babies from the influence of formula-milk promotion. By banning  the commercial activity surrounding infant feeding and instead providing impartial independent information to parents about infant feeding we are benefiting every parent and not just those who chose to breastfeed.
