Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her work with communities to plant trees in Kenya, founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977 to begin to tackle the twin problems of deforestation and community destruction. She has tackled governments and presidents, police and companies.



"The truth of the matter is that almost every conflict or war that we are fighting has to do with access to and control of resources and, since they are limited, the more we use them the more we will scrabble for them and compete for them, and therefore we need to find ways in which we can live without fighting over them."
